The production of ID.4 starts in May
After the pre-series production of the ID.4 at the VW plant in Emden, series production is now to start there in May.
This was announced by the carmaker during a visit to the site by VW brand boss Ralf Brandstätter, his successor Thomas Schäfer and the chairwoman of the general works council Daniela Cavallo - but only verbally.
After Zwickau, where the ID.4 is already being built, Emden will be the second plant in Germany where e-cars are built. For this purpose, between 1000 and 1500 additional workers will be hired at the site. The Skoda Enyac and its coupé offshoot are already built-in Mlada Boleslav (Czech Republic). The ID.4 is to be followed in Emden by an electric sedan in Passat format (study name ID.Vizzion) and later also by an estate car (study name ID.Space Vizzion). The production model, however, will probably be called ID.6.
Electric VW models are booming; according to the company's figures, it delivered more electric vehicles worldwide in 2021 than ever before: In total, more than 369,000 e-cars (+73 per cent) - including around 106,000 plug-in hybrids (+33 per cent) and 263,000 fully electric vehicles (+97 per cent) - were handed over to customers. Since the start of deliveries, the ID.4 had caused a boom in the E-SUV/crossover segment. Due to the debut of the VW ID.4 in Europe, sales of the SUV and crossover Stromer increased enormously. Supported by the ŠKODA Enyaq iV, which also comes from the VW Group. After ID.3, ID.4 is the second VW model based on the new modular e-drive system (MEB). The platform is specially tailored to the requirements of electric vehicles and the ID.4 marks the start of the global rollout.
