The new BMW 8 Series could become fully electric
The new 8 Series (codenamed G77) will go into production in 2026 and could again be based on the CLAR rear-wheel-drive platform, which is known to be suitable for all forms of the drive.
The rumours also suggest that BMW will slim down the 8 Series and only sell the best-selling variants - and in that case, that would be the four-door Coupe. The biggest surprise, however, would certainly be if the petrol and diesel engines are dispensed with.
After all, the V8 engines of the current M850i have been a good selling point so far. But even BMW cannot ignore the trend: the high-end premium market is turning towards electrification. The acceleration and performance figures of an electric car are simply unrivalled. And an all-electric 8 Series would close the gap between the upcoming i5 and the i7.
The question of the platform, on the other hand, is still open. From 2025, BMW will only build its new electric cars on the "New Class" platform, thus creating a completely new generation of cars. Until 2030, however, they also want to stick to the CLAR platform. So the new 8 Series could be built on both platforms.
It will probably be a question of time - the current 8-series generation will be phased out in 2025 or 2026, so it might be too early for the New Class. The CLAR platform could also be used to keep a loophole open in case the car market should once again turn in the direction of the combustion engine.
For the time being, this is only a rumour, although according to BMW blog it comes from a reliable source. Up to about three years before the start of production, essential components of a new vehicle generation can still be changed. But the prospect of an all-electric BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is certainly appealing, especially if it comes with a sleek and sporty design.
