Tesla Model Y: 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP

The European New Car Assessment Program Euro NCAP has awarded the Tesla Model Y with a 5-star safety rating. I

n addition to the 5-star safety rating, Model Y also achieved other notable results. For example, this received the highest overall score of any vehicle tested to date under Euro NCAP's latest and most rigorous testing protocol.

Among other things, this new protocol evaluates the Model Y's ability to protect adults, children and vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians, as well as the reliability of its safety assistants. In addition, the Model Y also performed well in the "adult occupant protection" category, earning a 97% rating. As Tesla states in the related announcement, and thus confirmed by Euro NCAP, this is the highest rating of all the vehicles tested with this protocol. This category is evaluated through a series of whiplash tests on the front, side and rear sections, as well as an analysis of other safety features such as rescue, recovery and safety after an accident.

"Euro NCAP's results demonstrate both our general commitment to the safety of our vehicles and, more specifically, the impact of recent enhancements introduced to all Model Y variants," Tesla said in its statement on the highly positive test result. As the automaker elaborates, various manufacturing techniques and safety features play their part in the result.

In connection with this, it mentions the rear floor casting in combination with the Model Y's reinforced battery pack. This gives the safety cell immense impact strength and helps maintain the integrity of the interior. This strength allows advanced restraint systems to deploy effectively in the cabin, holding occupants in place and providing protection from intrusion.

A so-called intermediate airbag provides additional protection in the event of a side impact, especially when two front seats are occupied. This airbag deploys between the front seats to reduce the risk of head injuries that could be caused by contact between seat occupants. In addition, other points stand out for the rating.

The Model Y also received an authoritative score of 98% in the Euro NCAP Safety Assist category. This result was achieved with Model Y vehicles equipped with Tesla Vision, a camera system and a neural network processing system, which is now installed as standard in all Tesla vehicles delivered in North America and Europe.
