Smart #3: Electric coupé SUV

Smart #3: Electric coupé SUV

Smart was able to present smart #1 as a forerunner into a new era at the beginning of March in Berlin.

Further models will follow as early as 2023 and 2024. It would be quite obvious that we will soon see the smart #2 on the road. However, according to recent publications by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), smart #3 will be on the road sooner.

Last Wednesday, the ministry announced several new models that may soon be sold in China. Among them was the new smart model, which looks very similar to the smart #1, at least from the front. Some of the basic data of the Stromer suggest further proximity to the smart #1. According to the information that has become known, smart #3 will be between 4,400 and 4,542 mm long.

As various platforms suggest, the two different lengths could indicate a normal and a Brabus version. This is justified by the fact that the Brabus version of smart #1 is already a little longer. At 4.40 metres, the smart #3 is thirteen centimetres longer than the familiar model. The wheelbase of 2,785 mm is three and a half centimetres longer. The height of 1,556 mm is 80 mm less than the first smart model. This leads to the assumption that the smart #3 is an e-coupé SUV.

Like smart #1, smart #3 will be available with one and two engines. The smart #1 and therefore also the smart #3 will be powered by an electric motor on the rear axle. This has an output of 200 kW/272 hp and a maximum torque of 343 Nm. The top speed is reached at 180 km/h and is sealed off. In the two-engine variant (Brabus), the standard power is upgraded from 200 kW (272 hp) to 315 kW (428 hp). Torque increases from 343 Nm to 543 Nm along with the change from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive.

It is believed that smart #3 will enter the ring against the Volvo C40 Recharge. The latter is based on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) and plays in a similar league with power ratings of 170 and 300 kW respectively. Prices for the smart #3 have not yet been announced. The price of the first Stromer can be used as a guide. The currently cheapest version of the new #1 costs at least a good 41,500 euros, a comparatively high price for a smart.
