Scania presents electric trucks for regional transport

Vehicles for inner-city delivery traffic are now joined by battery-electric trucks for regional transport. The new model range with a battery capacity of 624 kWh is available with R or S cabs. It offers companies many possible uses in regional applications.

"Our regional transport models are an important milestone for us as well as for our partners," says Christian Levin, CEO of Scania. "We are consistently developing our offering and opening up new opportunities for our customers and the entire transport ecosystem."

Scania's new battery-electric truck generation is based on classic cornerstones such as modularity and sustainability. The vehicles are on a par with conventional trucks in terms of performance and range in their respective areas of application. In the criteria of the economy and CO2 efficiency, they clearly outperform models with combustion engines, according to the manufacturer. But the switch from conventional to electric trucks is still complex. Scania, therefore, supports its customers in all areas of e-mobility: from charging infrastructure, service and maintenance to suitable financing models and insurance offers. "This range of solutions makes Scania a one-stop-shop for companies that want to take responsibility," says Fredrik Allard, Senior Vice President and Head of Electrification at Scania. "This is how we make the transition towards zero-emission transport easier for our customers."

With the new electric trucks, customers can operate chassis or combinations of tractors and trailers, for example for temperature-controlled food transport. The ranges vary depending on weight, configuration and route. A 4×2 tractor unit with six batteries, for example, can cover up to 320 kilometres at an average speed of 80 km/h on a full battery charge. Fixed routes with additional charging at the destination or occasional charging during the driver's rest break further increase the operational range.

"Scania has now reached a high level of maturity in its electrified offering with the regional delivery models," explains Allard. "Together with our electric trucks for urban distribution launched in 2020 and our hybrid models, we can now offer our customers a sustainable and versatile portfolio of zero-emission solutions."

The new Scania electric trucks can initially be ordered as 4×2 tractor units or as 6×2*4 chassis. This allows total weights of up to 64 tonnes to be specified. Charging power is up to 375 kW - which means that one hour of charging usually gives an additional range of 270 to 300 km. Continuous power for a Scania 45 R or S is 410 kW (equivalent to about 560 hp). Scania's new electric trucks can be ordered through local Scania branches from mid-July, with production starting in the fourth quarter of 2023.

"If we want to tackle the global CO2 challenges, we need to drive the transition to a transport system without fossil fuels," says Levin. "The conditions for this are good.

Scania wants to play an active role in the expansion of the charging infrastructure and also think beyond Group boundaries. Since 2021, the company has been working with global partners to establish a reliable high-performance charging network for heavy commercial vehicles. The goal: complete charging solutions from a single source to enable Scania customers to use e-trucks seamlessly.
