Renault ZOE: That's it. The successful electric car will not be relaunched.

2020 was probably the year of the Renault ZOE.

At least not a month went by without it making headlines. But just two years later, interest in the compact electric car no longer seems to exist. Or at least not as much as Renault would like. This is probably one of the reasons why it is no longer being relaunched.

Fabrice Cambolive, COO of Renault, confirmed that the ZOE will be discontinued. This equates to the end of the popular e-car, the first generation of which hit the road over ten years ago. Instead, Following the success of the electric Renault 5 prototype, the French carmaker is reviving the next automotive icon for the electric age. However, the 4EVER Trophy study has little in common with the Renault 4.

In addition, the Renault Clio and Captur will be continued. And these will be supplemented by the aforementioned new editions of the Renault 4 and 5, both of which are due to hit the roads in 2025. This would take a dual approach, with hybrid and electric models co-existing for the foreseeable future, as Cambolive elaborates. "It depends on the market. If a market is all-electric, that's fine, but most markets will have all-electric cars for the compact segment, and by 2035 we will have Clio and Captur if necessary. You will have hybrid technology because that is our solution, the technological choice we made to replace the normal combustion engine," Renault's COO said.

The decision to discontinue the Zoe ends a lifespan of more than a decade in which it was the best-selling electric car in Europe for two years in a row (2015 and 2016), selling more than 100,000 units in France alone. However, Renault sometimes does not list a definitive date for the end of its production. This will certainly depend on how quickly the other models can be launched.

In general, however, Renault will focus on mid-sized models in the future as opposed to the current compact cars. Cambolive indicated, "We have said that we will make more sales per unit in this 'renovation' phase. That is why we have decided to focus on our C-segment product range. We will soon launch the Mégane and then the Scenic. And after that, we will turn to the compact segment."
