Lexus Unveils New Electric Sports Car With Solid-state Battery
Heralding a battery-electric model offensive, the concept was first unveiled back in mid-December 2021 by Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corporation and founder of Lexus. The vehicle is not yet available for order and has not yet been homologated, nor has Lexus communicated a model name.
The new, two-seater sports model is to become part of a whole series of battery-electric vehicles that Lexus plans to bring to market by 2030 as part of its Lexus Electrified Vision. The premium brand says it wants to fully exploit the potential of electrification to offer customers a new level of driving pleasure. The Lexus Driving Signature is designed to guarantee a unique driving experience: Driving comfort combined with steering, acceleration, and braking behavior that is said to be perfectly attuned to the driver's intentions.
With its striking proportions and model-typical low ride height, the new sports car is intended to symbolize the future of the Lexus brand while reviving the spirit of the legendary Lexus LFA. The targeted technical data certainly sound appealing: Lexus states that the sprint from zero to 100 km/h should succeed in the low two-second range. That would be on par with a Rimac Nevera or Tesla Model S Plaid, two of the most powerful electric cars currently available.
It is also planned that the new electric car will use an innovative solid-state battery. The all-electric range of the purely electric sports car is expected to be more than 700 kilometers. The solid-state battery is also an indication that it will be quite a while before the new electric car is on the road. Toyota is already developing the new technology and has already tested it in the Toyota LQ concept car. However, the Japanese do not expect it to be used in series production until the middle of the decade at the earliest.
