Bentley wants to "enter a new era" with electric cars
With its Beyond 100 plan, a strategy for five new electric cars within five years from 2025, and record annual sales in 2021, Bentley is on the move. British Autocar spoke to Bentley boss Adrian Hallmark to find out more about the posh brand's electrification plans.
Hallmark believes that zero-emission cars and a sustainable supply chain will give Bentley a significant boost and attract "a new generation of buyers" who don't identify with 12-cylinder engines. By 2030, Bentley aims to have achieved complete carbon neutrality.
Initial trials with electric prototypes are due to begin this year. Hallmark did not reveal, however, in which segment the model is to be located. Rumour has it that it will be a jacked-up sedan or SUV. The design is said to be "more progressive" than current designs. "Not radical, but with hints that signal that we are entering a new era with this vehicle," said the Bentley CEO, who promised a "game-changer". The car is expected to have its unique look and format and stand out from current designs.
In appearance and driving comfort, however, it will still be a Bentley, Hallmark clarified. He added that the powertrain technology for the first car has already been determined and the interior design is 95 per cent complete, with the exterior design a good 80 to 85 per cent complete. Upcoming electric Bentleys are to be more aerodynamically designed than previous models so that overall efficiency can be improved in favour of the longest possible range.
Design models are also already available for the four other models by the end of the decade. Bentley also wants to break new ground in charging technology. Hallmark held out the prospect of inductive charging and systems in which the charging plug automatically docks with the car.
