Volvo: Five e-models and two PHEVs in the production line

Electrification is much more than a new drive technology for Volvo. And yet it is the focus.

From 2030 onwards, the company wants to manage entirely without combustion engines. On the way there, however, they are planning at least two partially electrified plug-in hybrids, as well as five more purely electric models, as was revealed at a dealer conference in the USA. The PHEVs are said to be "redesigned versions of the S90 and XC90 plug-in hybrids".

According to this, it can currently be assumed that it is the familiar hybrid layout with the two-litre petrol engine. However, equipped with a new battery and resulting in a higher electric range. Some light has also been shed on the purely electric models. It seems that the Volvo XC90 will indeed be fully electrified. In future, however, it will come off the production line as the Volvo Embla. Under the codename V546, a new electric crossover is to hit the road, which will sit between the XC60 and XC90 in the model portfolio. In addition, a new electric model below the XC40 is said to be planned.

Rumours are currently circulating that this will find its way onto the road as the Volvo XC20 Recharge. The supposed XC20 will follow the XC90, which should also expect a further electrification stage. It could be the first model built on Geely's new SEA platform. Geely's premium brand Zeekr is already launching a Shooting Brake on this platform in 2022, which will be offered with either an 86-kWh or a 100-kWh battery. Similar equipment could then also be expected in the "small" Volvo.

As Elective reports, there is also exciting news about the electric successor to the XC60. In the future, it could be presented as an electric crossover, which is somewhat flatter than Volvo's SUV and comes along as a kind of higher station wagon.
