Volkswagen holds out the prospect of further ID.Buzz variants

Volkswagen has revealed some details about future variants of the ID.Buzz.

These come from a presentation for investors published by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. According to the presentation, the Wolfsburg-based company has several new variants in the works: an ID.Buzz with a longer wheelbase and thus more length overall, another engine version with all-wheel drive, a van version with seven seats and a high-performance GTX model. VW had already hinted at the latter several times, and now there is another official teaser for it.

Concrete technical details or dimensions of the new variants are not apparent from the presentation. According to a sketch, the ID.Buzz with a longer wheelbase seems to be a good 30 to 40 centimetres long. In the graphic of the E-Bulli variant with seven seats, a slightly wider rear door is clearly visible, which will make it easier for the passenger: inside in the third row to get in. The GTX version of the ID.Buzz is only advertised with a GTX logo on the steering wheel. There are no other photos or details of the new variants.

The ID.Buzz GTX is expected to be four-wheel drive, like the GTX versions of the ID.4 SUV and its ID.5 coupé. In the two GTX models already available, two electric motors are used, one on the front and one on the rear axle. They have a system output of 220 kW (299 hp) and offer a total torque of 460 Nm. A permanently excited synchronous motor with an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and a torque of 310 Nm operates on the rear axle. An asynchronous motor with 80 kW (109 hp) and 162 Nm is also installed on the front axle. This is particularly compact and light can be overloaded for short periods and produces only minimal drag losses when it runs unpowered. The electronically limited top speed is 180 km/h.

The long-wheelbase model will reportedly get the largest battery available on the MEB platform, with a capacity of 111 kWh. It is also possible that the all-wheel drive will not only be available for the GTX version, but also as a classic 4Motion with slightly less power. The seven-seater layout of the ID. Buzz, meanwhile, is familiar: Two single seats in the first row, a bench seat for three in the second row and two split seats in the third row. One major uncertainty remains: The presentation is for the North American market. So it is unclear which versions will appear exclusively in North America and which will also be offered in Europe.
