Porsche 911 Will Come With A solid-state battery

The Porsche Taycan outstrips other models in the Zuffenhausen portfolio.

However, a fully electric Porsche 911 variant is not an option for the time being, as Porsche has said several times. But this could now change. If Manager Magazin (paywall) has its way, a fully electric Porsche 911 with a solid-state battery is in the works.

Last year, almost 40 per cent of all new Porsche vehicles delivered in Europe were electrified - i.e. plug-in hybrids or fully electric models. In addition, Porsche had announced that it wanted to be CO2-neutral on the balance sheet in 2030. The Porsche 911 in a fully electric version could therefore be on the road a little earlier than previously communicated. First of all, however, a hybrid version is in the planning stage: “The 911 is part of our sustainability strategy. The important thing is that if we think about hybridizing this vehicle, then not in the sense of a plug-in. It's more about characteristics from motorsport, i.e. a very sporty hybridization with high recuperation performance," says Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche.

With the 911, Porsche had previously held back. It seemed as if it would remain the only combustion engine in the long term, but would also be emission-free thanks to e-fuels. That remains the official line. According to information from Manager Magazin, this attitude seems to be changing. An internal team is currently developing an electric version with a solid-state battery, as a second version alongside the combustion engine.

Extensive investments are currently being made in core technologies such as battery systems and module production. In the newly founded Cellforce Group, high-performance battery cells are developed and produced, which should be ready for series production by 2024. These would also be conceivable for use in the 911. A solid-state battery from the collaboration with the Californian startup Quantumscape is likely to be more realistic. VW had only invested 100 million dollars in Quantumscape in 2021 and thus secured around a third of the shares.
