Extreme E plans rally series with hydrogen cars

The Extreme E racing series wants to start a rally racing series with hydrogen cars in 2024.

Analogous to the name Extreme E, the purely electric racing series, the hydrogen racing series is to be called Extreme H. Alejandro Agag, who was recently awarded the "Pioneering and Innovation Award" by Autosport 2022, announced the news before the opening race of the Extreme E.

"Extreme E was developed to be a test lab for innovation and solutions for our mobility," Agag said. He said it has become increasingly clear over time that the creation of a hydrogen racing series is a natural progression of the mission to showcase new technologies and solutions to climate problems.

Together with the current Extreme E teams, it will be decided in the coming months how best to integrate hydrogen-powered cars into the race weekend. There are three options, he said: A complete switch to hydrogen, two separate categories or joint races.

"Extreme E is an FIA race series and we intend to again work closely with the FIA and the Automobile Club de Monaco in the development of Extreme H," Agag added. Motorsport, he said, is a fast and effective platform to drive innovation.

The Extreme H race cars are expected to have the same drivetrain and chassis used in Extreme E. The key differentiating factor of Extreme H, he said, will be that a hydrogen fuel cell will replace the battery as the main energy source. The hydrogen for the races will be produced on site in an environmentally sustainable way using solar eon-siteThis technology is already used behind the scenes of the Extreme E, where it provides the energy for the vehicles' batteries.

The Extreme E racing series uses various methods to keep its overall carbon footprint as low as possible. Some examples include using a refurbished vessel to transport the championship's cargo and logistics equipment, including the race cars and paddocks; using remote broadcasting and digital streaming; capping team personnel numbers, and using a combination of battery power and green hydrogen to supply electricity. Development for the Extreme H race car is already underway, he said, to show a prototype in early 2023.
