2022 Toyota Aygo: First Drive, Review and Prices

While other manufacturers are leaving the segment, Toyota is relaunching its city car: first test drive with the new Toyota Aygo X (2021)...

City cars like the Peugeot 108, Suzuki Alto, and Seat Mii have disappeared from showrooms. The exception is the new Toyota Aygo X (2021), which was ready for our first test drive. The new edition of the Aygo will launch in the spring of 2022 as the Aygo X - in keeping with the spirit of the times in a fashionable SUV format. Ground clearance has been increased by eleven millimeters compared with its predecessor and the seating position has even been raised by 55 millimeters. The most important innovation of the city car is the new platform: It is based on the shortened GA-B platform of the Toyota Yaris. As a result, suspension comfort and torsional stiffness are now significantly better. No more rumble on the front axle, the body is no longer constantly in motion. In addition, the new Toyota Aygo X (2021) has grown by 23.5 centimeters in length, of which nine centimeters benefit the wheelbase. This is particularly noticeable in the first row, where there is more space. In the rear, however, little has changed: legroom is still only suitable for children, and getting in through the narrow rear doors requires skill. The load volume, on the other hand, has increased by 60 to 231 liters. When the two split rear seat backrests are folded down, the Toyota can even hold 829 liters - although a high loading sill and a step in the load compartment floor have to be overcome.

As before, the new Toyota Aygo X (2021) is powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers 72 hp. Customers can choose between a manual five-speed gearbox (from 15,390 euros) and a continuously variable CVT transmission (from 19,090 euros). The engine sounds quite rough during our first test drive due to its design. It is not overly muffled and thus always present.

Nevertheless, the three-cylinder is economical: Toyota gives 4.7 liters of premium per 100 kilometers as WLTP consumption, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 107 grams per kilometer. The top speed of the manual car is 158 km/h. Even in city traffic, the car is by no means a hindrance. Traffic lights are started quickly, and gear changes with the manual transmission are both smooth and precise. Even the basic version of the new Toyota Aygo X (2021) has air conditioning and power windows at the front. The equipment can be upgraded to LED headlights, partial leather seats, and a JBL sound system - but the Aygo X then costs at least 21,550 euros (Limited). What all Aygo X models have in common is exemplary safety equipment with emergency brake assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and high beam assist. Operation is quickly learned, and the workmanship of the pre-production vehicle looks tidy. Sales will start on April 23, 2022.
